There are specific injuries like "Cauliflower Ears" that can be caused by a direct blow when thrown on to the a mat while wrestling. Injury occurs when the cartilage tissue of the outer ear is damaged from the impact.

Wrestling is aggressive where injuries are not a uncommon thing in a sport that involves lots of rough movement and aggressive throws. There are specific injuries like "Cauliflower Ears" that can be caused by a direct blow when thrown on the wrestling mat. With the direct hit of the ear on to the mat the injury occurs when the cartilage tissue of the outer ear is damaged from the impact.

Cauliflower Ears can start when athletes not just wrestlers keep receiving a direct blow to any part of their ear. The force of the impact causes the skin layer to pull or tear away from the cartilage tissue with in the ear. When this happens the blood flow to the ear increases that creates a blister like swelling under the skin of the ear. This swelling can cause some pain for the athlete suffering from this injury.

The outer ear is the most common place for this swelling to appear but the swelling can also occur inside the ear also. If this is the case the athletes ability to hear and balance may be impaired. If this happens then the athlete needs to be checked out through special testing to see if care is needed.

If swelling or a deep red irritated skin is noticed when suffering from Cauliflower Ears you should see a doctor. If this occurs immediate treatment is needed with the application of a ice bag and direct pressure, but the blood accumulation needs to be removed and constant pressure applied to help reattach the two tissues. In some instances incase of infection you may find that antibacterial medication is needed.
